Day 16 // The Lord Determines Our Steps

Proverbs 16

1 We can make our own plans,

but the Lord gives the right answer.

2 People may be pure in their own eyes,

but the Lord examines their motives.

3 Commit your actions to the Lord,

and your plans will succeed.

4 The Lord has made everything for his own purposes,

even the wicked for a day of disaster.

5 The Lord detests the proud;

they will surely be punished.

6 Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin.

By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.

7 When people’s lives please the Lord,

even their enemies are at peace with them.

8 Better to have little, with godliness,

than to be rich and dishonest.

9 We can make our plans,

but the Lord determines our steps.

    Dear Pastor Kerry
Verse 9 stood out to me because I use PROVERBS 3,5,&6 t0 be able to see it is ok to have plans for your life however if I trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding, acknowledge Him and He will make my path straight. Verse9 in his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.
    I feel safe beginning n
my plans k nowing he will gently guide my steps

    Dear Pastor Kerry,

Verse 9 speaks to me very strongly. When my husband lost his job about 2 years ago, my faith with God was almost non existent until that day. All I have to say is God is AMAZING. I have never seen or experienced such joy in my life. We can make our plans but the Lord determines our steps is just so peaceful.

Wow!!! Proverbs 16:31………………..I love my gray patch. It’s my seal of approval. I have had it since birth. Pastor Kerry superbowl Sunday GOD touched me and kept me. I was in the ICU going into renal failure, but he kept me and I am recovering. I was unemployed and ill. I am praising HIM because He restored me totally. Before I was discharged from the hosputal HE had restored my health and my finances………….

GOD is Good and GRAY is HIS favorite color!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Verses 1, 3, 9, and 33 – They all have the same basic point: that God is in control. To me, the thing that stands out is how many times that is repeated in this chapter alone. That must mean that it is pretty important.

  • Kelli

Verse 3: Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed. My husband and I are facing a major decision right now. This verse really spoke to me. If we just commit our lives and our resources to God, He will bless us. Even more, if we seek good wisdom, our plans will be made with godly wisdom in the first place.

Also, verse 7: “When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them.”. I’m not sure what God is saying to me with this one…it just really stood out.

The last verse of Proverbs spoke volumes to me! God determines how the dice will fall, regardless of how we throw them. This is a daily reminder that God is in control and he has already determined my path! I must trust in the Lord because he will never forsake me!

  • Kathy

I have learned this lesson in the last few years but wished I would have learned sooner. I tried controlling my life for years. I finally realized that I couldn’t do it on my own. The Lord does determine our steps. Vs. 3 Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed. Once you fully trust in the Lord and embrace His plans for you, you will have amazing Peace in everything. Have a blessed day!

My favorite is Verse 9: We make plans but the Lord determines our steps

I like to think this is God’s way of taking care of us because sometimes we don’t know what path is best to take but he is in control of our lives and will make sure we are on the right path. His plans usually turn out better than we could ever have imagined or hoped for.

Pastor Kerry…thank you so much for these daily lessons. I love them.. i get so excited each morning to turn the computer ( and i am not much of a computer plugged in person ) on and hear your inspiring words and encouragement. Verse 24 really spoke to me this morning….kind words are truly so sweet to hear and sweet to give for the body and soul.

All a man’s ways seem right to him,
but the Lord evaluates the motives. This verse spoke to me in that we need to check the reasons why we plan or do things- is it to glorify us or to glorify Him- it’s not only about taking the right action, but also doing it for the right reason.

The versus that jump out at me today are 1, 3, 9, 16, and 20. I’ve made some plans and goals recently, and this reminded me that it’s God’s plans and goals for me that are more importantant. He knows exactly what I need, and where He wants me to go, so I need to put my plans and goals in His hands, and let Him bring me success. Also, to be wise when He closes a door and makes me realize that He has a much better door He wants me to go through.
On a funny note, I did really like the verse #31 too. I’ve been noticing a lot of those lately! LOL!
Thank you Kerry, have a Blessed day!

Proverbs 1,3 and 33 are the verses that stood out for me today.
I need to constantly remind myself that I’m not the one in control, God is. THANK GOODNESS!!! So the lesson I need to learn is to chill out! I have to trust that if God decides a “door” or a “chapter” in my life is going to be closed, he is has an even better one for me to enter.

I really like the chapter a day approach. It helps to get my day started in the right direction.

Pastor Kerry thank you so much for your daily devotionals leading and encouraging me to read the book of proverbs, the book of Wisdom. Today’s reading of verse 9 NIV In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. We have our plan. But if it does not line up with the Lord and we resist – His way will eventually take place, we have the choice to comply and travel the difficult road or surrender and go His way which is always best – HE knows best and where He leads He will provide. It is up to us if we will surrender and go His way or resist and go our way, eventually we will go His way as we realize that our way does not work. He loves us too much to allow us to remain on our course in life that takes us from him. Thank you and bless you and Chris!

  • Ron

Good morning pastor Kerry! It really is hard for me to pick out a favorite verse because everything in Proverbs is pertaining to me right now. It is speaking to me about every aspect of my life right now from business decisions to struggles with faith to being the wisest person that I can be. So I find it very interesting that when I chose to rebuild on my faith at that exact time frame you chose the teachings of Proverbs which tells me when you ask you shall receive. Thank you !!!!

16:9 – We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps

Just this weekend, my boss & I were discussing how we can make all the plans in the world, but God will always let us know if it is the right time or the right move.

About 9 months ago, my boss told me that certain things had to happen before he could hire me. Well, as time went by none of those things had come true. So he decided to pray about it. After speaking to our Lord & Savior, he took a leap of faith and hired me.

As of today, those ¨certain things¨ that I mention needed to happen still hasn´t, but our company is becoming stronger and stronger. We all know that its because of the power of God.

Both verses 20 and 28 are very meaningful to me. I am endeavoring into horse rescue, and have listened to God in my heart. I recently brought home the sweetest old gal who is a rack of bones. Everything fell together just right, and I even received help in an unexpected way. 28 because of strife brought into a group of friends by words.

  • Teresa Barrett

Very hard, but I’ll go w/verse 3 today, tomorrow it may be another.

  • Mphatso Khoza

    Pastor Kerry
Proverbs 16:3 is a verse that my wife and I found one day when we “cut” the bible. If you are not familiar with “cutting”, its when you pray and ask God to lead you to a specific word and then you open the bible to a random spot. We read all of chapter 16 and really focused on verse 3, the translation of which was “trust in God as if everything depends on Him and work as if everything depends on you”. This has been a guiding principle for us and one that we will hopefully convey to our children.

We love you and all that God is doing through you and your ministry very much.

I liked verse 32 “Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.”

  • Dera

Verse 9 speaks to me the loudest in that I find myself meditating on this verse constantly. God reveals himself in my plans lately more and more. He continues to make a way for me when I feel I’m at my wits end… and lately that’s most of the time. I was reminded of this verse during the ice storm recently and I ignored better judgement and decided to go to work. Driving at normal speed and ignoring slow moving vehicles, my car spun out 180 degrees and nearly missed an 18 wheeler . My car stopped , facing one coming traffic. I didn’t trip though, I slowly made my way to the off ramp and praised God for saving me from myself;for my mind was focused on a plan to resolve a situation at work that left me distracted and caused me to disregard my own safety. My prayer each night for God to continue to work on me, through me and with me, for I’m nothing without him in my life. To God be the glory… God Bless you Pastor Kerry.

Verse 32 and 33 spoke to me, because sometimes you need to be patient and we throw the dices, but he control how they fall.

I started this late, but I’m still with you! I made some terrible decisions in 2005 and moved in with someone that I got engaged to. It ended last year with no warning and my life as I knew it was totally destroyed. Therefore, Vs 1 about making our own plans, but now over 5 years later, The Lord gives the right answer. Along with that vs 9 We can make our own plans, but the Lord determines our steps. I had my plans, but since I didn’t go the right way, God determined my steps, to I believe now, bring me on the path He has set for me.AND along with those 2 verses, vs 25. That path seemed right to me after I had validated it in my mind, but I see now it was leading to death of my soul. SO put 1,9,and 25 together, they spell out my mistakes in those 4 1/2 years. Painful lessons.

Verse 7 – “When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them.” This speaks to my heart immensely.  How beautiful it is to know that the Lord is pleased with how you are living. We make so many mistakes and wrong decisions in our lives and yet His mercies are new every morning, great isHis faithfullness, what a blessing. My desire is for God to be pleased with me every day.
    Thanks Pastor Kerry.

I have been fighting with myself about being totally honest in my job, I guess I need to take the first step and give God the wheel for a bit.  Let him show me how things should be done.
