Day 14 • The Way, The Truth, & The Life

John 14

Jesus, the Way to the Father

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. 7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

9 Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.

12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”

23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.

30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.

I am so amazed at how the Lord orchestrates life. My Dad is in the end stages of his life suffering from a degenerative disease, vascular dementia. He is in a hospital and we will be moving him home on Monday under hospice care. This chapater gave me great comfort in knowing that “Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people”. My Dad is a believer and I know God has a place prepared for him. As my sister put it at she was driving home late one night when there was a full moon “God has the porch light waiting for Dad to come home” What a beautiful picture. Please pray for my Dad’s comfort and for my Mom as she goes through loosing her mate of 62 years. Her heart is broken.

  • Spencer Booth

I love that! “God has the porch light waiting for Dad to come home”

  • Delena Cooper

Thank you for sharing. Your story is beautiful. Peace be with you.

  • Erin Hall

God’s perfect timing brought these words to you today, and I’m so happy that they brought you comfort. I will pray for you as well, and although nothing is better than God’s word for us, I was wondering if you had read 90 Minutes In Heaven by Don Piper? I read it recently, and it gave such a descriptive picture of what heaven is like. I think you would appreciate it.
    Have a blessed day.

Susan….these thoughts came to mind as I read and felt you with such gentleness and love for your dad and mom. May your mom see the end of this life, yes, but the beginning of a life eternally as your dad reaches his hand toward her in waiting. Gone visually, but their Spirits never separated. His Comforting Cover over you and your family.

  • Juanita Wamble

Felecia – you are in my prayers. May you feel the peace the God promises – be patient with yourself – continue to seek and you shall find. God has such a wonderful plan for all of us – I am confident of that – although at times I too am lazy and self serving but then I am reminded of His promises and what I need to be doing. Hugs and Blessings during your journey!

Susan you and your family are in our prayers. I loved what you said.”God has the porch light on waiting for your Dad to come home”. Thank you for sharing your story with us today. Thank you Pastor Kerry for todays bible study. It opened my eyes on what heaven will be like when God calls me home. I am going to live each day for the Lord and walk with him and talk with him. I want Jesus to be the light of my life. AMEN

  • Lori Hofferber

Thank you again Pastor Kerry! I’m felling anxious knowing that this study will end. I love it! Any chance you would do the whole bible like this?! :) 365 days w/Pastor Kerry!!! Yeah. :)

Susan, thank you for your story and I will pray for your family.

Felecia, never give up, I struggle too with reading the bible somedays. I have gotten lazy to pull the “extra chair” over, so now I pat the seat I’m sitting in and sit on God’s lap and know it’s okay with HIm. Being successful in studying the bible is a journey, just keep going!!

  • Tania Almanzar

Today my sister law went to be with god.Everybody please pray for her for she left a 6yr old baby girl!

  • John M.

I am so sorry for your loss. I pray the peace of God which trascends all understanding would guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

I know words cannot do justice to how you are feeling. I know the Holy Spirit is the great comforter. I pray the continued annointing of the Holy Spirit over you and your family today and always.

  • John M.

Felecia, the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy. Do not let Satan get a strangle hold on you. You are more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus. God gives us all 24 hours in a day. Ask God to show you what you should be doing. What His will is for your life. Then do it. God gives us the strength to stand against the schemes of the enemy. Please read Ephesians 6:11 which talks about putting on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil; and having done all, TO STAND.

  • Rob Miller

One door closes and another door opens. As we prepare for a life not on earth, we need to remember that we will still be close to those missed. Yes, we will meet again.

It sounds like your family’s strong faith will make this transition easier that it would be for those who lack faith.

I pray for your dad and for your family.

  • Debi Holley

I am praying for you and your family now and my thoughts and prayers will continue to be with you. God is with you and your Dad and all your family…it will hurt to see his earthly passing, but his destination is far greater…and you will see him one day welcoming you along side of the Lord.

  • Tania Almanzar

    Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

it hurts so bad,but thank you for those words of wisdom!

  • Luis Lozada

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles.
    (Psalm 34:17)

  • Jimmy Rife

Jesus promised that the Holy spirit would be within us who believe in Him and accept his Word. I am blessed that Christ has entered my life and I now feel the power of God’s Word in my life each day. God Bless.

  • Nicole Williams

God be with you all. In the name of Jesus, amen.

  • WendyTG

Praise God for your strength. It is joyful to know your dad will be dancing with God–in His timing. We are the caretakers of my sister who has early age onset dementia and it is a daily battle with her. But it is God that always pulls us through each moment of the day. My prayers to you and your family.

    In Christ’s love,

  • WendyTG

Take heart what John is telling you. Pray daily to “clothe the Armor of God” and “fruits of the spirit”. Every morning I pray for this and more, things I may struggle with I ask for protection or God’s guidance. Even just reading a simple verse a day will be one step towards fighting satan and his attacks. You have been added to my prayer log I keep on folks.

    In Christ,

  • WendyTG

Sorry to hear of your loss. My prayers for peace and comfort to you and your family and her little six year old. God heals all wounds and He will see you through. Reflect on His love, compassion, and Open Arms waiting to hug you. And reflect on your good times with your sister.

    In God’s love,

  • Susan Mathews

I have read it and it I too loved the picture of Heaven he described. I am so thankful for God’s timing – it is comforting knowing God is in control. Thank you for your prayers.

  • Tania Almanzar

Thank you for all your support and prayers

  • Anita

I have never heard the Holy Spirit called “The Advocate” before, but I absolutely love that name for Him! The one who comforts us also advocates for us.
In a word – Our source of peace is the one who makes our case to the judge, who is also Himself. Love it, love it. What Bible translation is this?
