Day 5 • Would You Like To Get Well?

John 5

Jesus Heals a Lame Man

1 Afterward Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days. 2 Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches. 3 Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches. 5 One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”

7 “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”

8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!”

9 Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath, 10 so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!”

11 But he replied, “The man who healed me told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”

12 “Who said such a thing as that?” they demanded.

13 The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd. 14 But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.” 15 Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.

Jesus Claims to Be the Son of God

16 So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. 17 But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” 18 So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.

19 So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished. 21 For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants. 22 In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge, 23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.

24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

25 “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. 26 The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son. 27 And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man. 28 Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son, 29 and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment. 30 I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will.

Witnesses to Jesus

31 “If I were to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be valid. 32 But someone else is also testifying about me, and I assure you that everything he says about me is true. 33 In fact, you sent investigators to listen to John the Baptist, and his testimony about me was true. 34 Of course, I have no need of human witnesses, but I say these things so you might be saved. 35 John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message. 36 But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has testified about me himself. You have never heard his voice or seen him face to face, 38 and you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me—the one he sent to you.

39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.

41 “Your approval means nothing to me, 42 because I know you don’t have God’s love within you. 43 For I have come to you in my Father’s name, and you have rejected me. Yet if others come in their own name, you gladly welcome them. 44 No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God.

45 “Yet it isn’t I who will accuse you before the Father. Moses will accuse you! Yes, Moses, in whom you put your hopes. 46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me. 47 But since you don’t believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

  • Jimmy Rife

Jesus showed me that there is always time to find faith and belief in God. Even when He was being questioned for performing healing on the sabbath, His bold responses to the Jewish leaders gave me goose bumps, that being the Son of God, He was always working to spread the Word of His Father. He IS wonderful.

this i what is called human. we’ve all lived that isn’t exactly Christ like. I am in a group called celebrate recovery. With God’s help He has showed me how to have a true relationship with Him. My life has changed so much in the last 4 years. He has taken a sinner like me to pay it forward and you are no different than the rest of us that has taken the wrong path. The best thing is He has taken all of the shame, pain and guilt away for each layer he has healed me of. Today I give people hope after they hear my testimony. Not only has God worked on the above issues He allowed me to lose 100 pounds and keep it off all with his strenght.I will be praying for you. Have a blessed week.

  • Micky McCarter

Heb 10:22 God will cleanse your guilty conscience. Heb 10:25 We are encouraged to gather together and encourage one another.

No where in the Bible does it say to clean yourself up then come to church. Church is a healing place for the lost, sick, and broken hearted. Come as your are. God wants us all.

It is a lot easier to follow through when you hac=ve the support of a church family.

  • Lori Hofferber

    Thanks Pastor Kerry.

  • mike

Thank you for your message today.

  • Elizabeth O’Dell

Thank you for this beautiful healing message today Pastor Kerry. I am going to jump out of the old boat of following rules and jump into the new boat of following Jesus Christ the Son of God. Again Thank you and have a bless day.

  • AJ

Wow ! Does this hit home – I distinctly remember the very first time the seed of Christ was planted in me; one conversation with a stranger – that ended in- Jesus is the only way, a suttle smile and strong handshake. I was like dude, I sooo don’t deserve this – gotta get straight before facing god. Several years of trying and failing he he, it finally hit me – “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” – in other words – pick up yer bags and walk with me NOW -giddy up ! Still growing, learning and cleaning up stuff – but I now have a bigger vaccum cleaner, some heavenly oxi clean, and sometimes a baseball bat that’s in the hands of Jesus. The baseball bat hurts sometimes, but god turns everything around for good ! God bless !

  • Diane

Jesus says to come as you are – in your sin, in your fear and confusion. Don’t worry about pleasing men – please God. He has planted a seed in your heart, and the Word will water it, so soak up the Word. Being “in the Lord” for 40 years makes us no better than the worst sinner, if it is built on judging others and pride in ourselves. We would all be bound for hell, except that we are plants in God’s greenhouse. It is the sick who need a Physician, not the well. Keep seeking Him, and you will find Him. You will also find good Christian friends who will not judge you. If someone judges you, it’s not their job to do so. God is our Judge, so do what He says, and you’ll be with Him forever.

  • L. R. Griffin Jenkins

Why do we mind the “haters” instead of studying on Christ? There are times when I lay on my mat, giving excuses, nursing fears and licking wounds–totally disrespecting the power of God. Thank you for this message! His word is a lamp. Wierdly, I am thinking of that Michael Jackson video in which his path lights up with every foot fall. That is how every believer’s path should look if he or she is plugged into the Word.

  • Sherry

So true Mickey. God doesn’t look down at us for being a mess when we come to church. I think He wants us to come that way to experience the true healing power of His love!

  • Bethany Burghoff-Lainhart

Great message again today and as always spot on. I see the mat as a security blanket and it’s difficult many times to leave it behind and take up the security in knowing that Jesus Christ is all we need. Help me Lord today, to leave behind the mat in my life and take up refuge in your plan for me today. Give me the strength to so the same tomorrow.

  • Sherry

Healing comes to those who ask for it. Even when the physical isn’t healed Chirst will heal the sprit. Our bodies are only temporary vessels anyway. I say pick up that mat and carry it on home and throw it away! With Jesus there is no reason to lay on it anymore and make excuses. :)

  • Shane Coppock

Most would say, “Why did he ask?” Jesus wants everyone to have and live an abundant life. However we all must make the decision that we are ready to be whole. Sometimes we all in our carnality will enjoy the attention and pampering we receive when we are not well. We must mature past this and see ourselves as what God wants, Whole individuals that we may go out into a hurting world and share our story. Awesome 3 minutes Pastor. Thanks so much…Be blessed.

God tells us to not worry about our outward appearance. In addition to our 21 day reading of John, I have my own personal devotions I read. Today I read in “Jesus Calling” about how easy it is to touch up our outward apearance but God sees through us. God asks us to rejoice in Him and to talk to Him about our struggles and feelings of inadequacies and how He will transform our weaknesses into strengths. One of the verses mentioned to read is 1 Samuel 16:7 “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

Pastor Kerry hit it right when he ask the question “Do I want to be healed?” Do I want to change?” With both physical limitations and emotional anguish I suffer, I have said yes to both along time ago and wait with God to heal me along this journey, even if I do not like it, there is always something to learn.

You’re wonderful and know that God knows all of you!

this is such a wonderful experience :)

  • John M.

The million dollar question……”What are the things I am relying on other than Jesus Christ?”
For Peace, For Comfort, For Joy, For Love, For Happiness?
All is empty in the end without Christ. I must allow Christ into all areas of my life and experience His love to express His love – to myself, my family, my church, my neighborhood, etc.

  • Bernadette Pena

Thank You Pastor Kerry-this is a awesome journey we are taking …i look forward to this everyday…Thank You Lord for giving me another day to be with my family and friends…
