Day 1 • The Word

John 1

Prologue: Christ, the Eternal Word

1 In the beginning the Word already existed.

The Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

2 He existed in the beginning with God.

3 God created everything through him,

and nothing was created except through him.

4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,

and his life brought light to everyone.

5 The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness can never extinguish it.

6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”

16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

The Testimony of John the Baptist

19 This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?” 20 He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.”

21 “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?”

“No,” he replied.

“Are you the Prophet we are expecting?”

22 “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah:

“I am a voice shouting in the wilderness,

‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’”

24 Then the Pharisees who had been sent 25 asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?”

26 John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. 27 Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.”

28 This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.

Jesus, the Lamb of God

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ 31 I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. 33 I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”

The First Disciples

35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.

38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.

They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”[m]).

42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.

45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”

46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”

“Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.

47 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.”

48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”

49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”

50 Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”

  • Bethany Burghoff-Lainhart

Thank you Pastor Kerry, this was a fantastic way to start my day. “The Light shines in the darkness” It hit me right away, as I heard the same thing on talk radio this morning. Our character is determined in the darkness and that is where we are attacked by Satan. Let God shine his word through us so that our characters may align with Jesus Christ.

  • Dewana Harding

I started my day reading this passage. To be honest, it was hard for me to actually sit and read. I have become lazy in reading about the lord. This is going to be hard but rewarding. Please pray for me and others that will find it a challenge to complete this task. I am looking forward to my 21 day walk. Thank you for starting this walk Pastor Kerry.

I enjoyed the reading very much what great way to star the day thanks.

I visited the church for the third time on Sunday and looked forward to this 21 day challenge. I am captivated by the way John the baptist freely let go of his disciples to follow Jesus, the ultimate teacher. What humility to release things to and for Jesus’ sake.

@Alex great observation! several times John says, “Look!”, and directs the attention away from himself and towards Jesus Christ

  • Woodlands Church

    @Jess yes, Amazing!

  • Marsha

What an awesome Pastor we have. Challenges to read scripture as this motivates and makes it a part of the day. Can we get Pastor Kerry to do this for the remainder of the year?

  • Scott

I am really excited about this lesson plan. I am really excited to get to know who Jesus truly is, and understand what The Bible says about him. This is going to be great for my personal growth this year as a Christian.

A New Year – a fresh start. We will soon be added to Woodlands/West membership list. Have visited for a couple of months, and can’t wait to meet some of you, and develop good, strong Christian friendships. The daily studies are great! You’ve made us “excuse-less” by putting the Word of God before us. Something to carry us through each day in victory. Thanks for deciding to come to Katy.

  • Mr. Worthy

I got through this. Even though my cats were distracting me. I called them Devil cats, cuz they were trying to keep me away from the word of God, lol. Oh to have been there…..

  • Laura Diller

I am so excited that you are doing the 21 Encounters with Christ. It gives me a purpose and allows me to start my day off knowing He is by my side.

  • Eddie Macaluso

That guy in the video said he couldn’t wait for Day 2. Day 1 was really awesome and the duality of Christ at first surprised me. Then I thought about it and John was spot on. I have to agree with the guy in the video. I too think each day will be a new and awesome walk with the most interesting Man/God who ever lived. Thanks Pastor K!

  • Casi

After yesterday’s sermon, I started thinking about how grateful I am to have God in the driver’s seat as our family goes through some difficult situations that I don’t know how to handle. It is comforting to know that He knows my future and has plans for me to prosper. We are having to make some difficult decisions, though, and I always pray about them first, but I am having a hard time hearing God’s direction. Since I want to keep God in the driver’s seat, how do I know if I am making decisions that will keep me on the path that he has planned for me?

  • Theodosia

As always Gods word is so awesome, a perfect food for the soul. Thank you and may continue to give you divine ways to reach his people….Much love

  • Maricela Campos

I want to Thankyou! Pastor Kerry for this way of Learning the Word of God & Our Lord Jesus. I always felt that I was far away from God and Our Lord Jesus Christ. Cause I did not know what church to go to? Then I came to your church and I feel more connected & I don’t fear church anymore! I Thank you, I am glad that these 21 days I will get to learn more about God & Our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • DOUG

Thank you GOD for giving us a church that can allow us these things to be able to encourage us to read your word each day. I thank you Pastor Kerry and Woodlands Church for getting this set up for us especially now, my wife lost her job this weekend and I am very grateful to be able to start this 21 day encounter with christ, it gives me great comfort. THANKS

  • Alex Williams

I know I love that too!!!

  • Cindy Nash

My husband and began attending Fellowship of the Woodlands in 2006, and were the first couple baptised at the Woodlands Church for 2009. For different reasons we haven’t attended church service in quite some time. And in not doing so, a void began to develop in my heart, my life and every other aspect of who I am and I told my husband I HAVE to get back into church. We had visited other churches before becoming members of FOTW and one or two since we became members of FOTW, and not one could measure up to the feeling we receive when we come in the doors of FOTW or leave for home. I knew God had put it in my heart to go to church yesterday (1/9) and I’m glad he did. My husband and I sat together last night and for the first time in a LONG time, we made time for God and time for each other. I read the first chapter of John aloud, and we discussed it together. It was an AMAZING time, and I’m looking forward to Jude and me sharing Chapter 2 of the book of John tonight. Thank you, Pastor Kerry, for your words and your ability to share the Word of God in a manner that it can really touch a person’s soul.

  • Marsha Biles

Pastor Kerry: Thank you for doing your best at teaching us how important it is to take time for a daily quiet time. I have been a Christian for many years but this seems to be a challenge in my busy life. It is sad that I can’t seem to take a few minutes out of my life to place importance on the One who matters most…..our loving Lord Jesus. My son is a pastor and “always” has his quiet time. What a Wonderful Difference it makes when you make this part of your daily life. Thanks again Pastor.

  • Amarisa

I am so excited about the 21 Daily Encounters with Christ! Todays reading was amazing and I look forward to reading them all. It is a wonderful way for me to learn more about Jesus. I am thankful that I found FOTW and have never been happier in a church! My children love going too :)

  • Woodlands Church

  • Michele

I love this. I wish you could do this for the whole year and not just January.

  • Woodlands Church

@Mr.Worthy, that is so funny. the Bible does say “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion”

  • Woodlands Church

@laura it is going to be a great journey…..and from the looks of all these comments, it looks like tons of people are coming along for the ride

  • Woodlands Church

@eddie love the videos from Pastor Kerry. he is a great guide for this journey through John

  • Woodlands Church

@casi great question. reading God’s word like we are doing in this challenge is a great place to start. His word speaks about many issues and decisions that we face in life. However, there are many times when scripture doesn’t speak clearly about a particular issue or decision. In those cases, it is best to pray over the decision as you are doing and to seek counsel from other Christians

  • Woodlands Church

@theodosia “food for the soul”. great way to put it

  • Woodlands Church

@maricela we are so grateful that God led you to Woodlands Church!

  • Woodlands Church

@doug praying that your wife will find a new employment opportunity soon. I think you will continue to find great comfort from God’s word

  • Woodlands Church

@marsha you certainly aren’t the only one who struggles with keeping daily scripture reading as a part of your daily schedule. praying that this challenge will help all of us fall in love with God’s word all over again

  • Woodlands Church

@amarisa we are thankful that you found Woodlands Church too! and we love the fact that your children love our church too

  • Woodlands Church

@michele we love this too. we will continue to offer online resources like this as often as we can. thanks!

  • Pam

Thank you for providing us with direction to help us stay stong to handle anything and everything that comes our way. I really feel as many others do that this 21 day walk with our Lord will help us to know the word on a more personal level. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s reading!

Thank you Pastor Kerry and the entire group of people that put everything together at WC. I do not have a computer so I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to view the videos or passages, but to my surprise they both work wonderfully on my phone. Thank you all again for your hard work. I look forward to the next 20 days and more.

  • Bernadette Pena

About a month after Richard and I moved to Houston we decided as a couple to start attending Woodlands Church East..We as a family look forward to attending on Sundays..The first time we attended the service we went with my sister and brother in law and found that it was so powerful..that I broke down in tears. I have never experencied something like this before and i felt so blessed and good as a person that I left there with so much love and joy in my heart..That I knew that if I commited my life to Christ that anything would be possible..Like you had once said Pastor Kerry, you have to give up and then He will be there..I gave up on something about two weeks ago and something amazing happened..He answered my prayers and took care of me and my family. Im a true believer and I am so happy to be attending your church…I couldnt wait to start this new series with you..Im excited to see what tomorrow will bring! Thank You

  • Tony LoRicco

This was really good. I enjoyed it and look forward to tomorrow.

  • John

    Thank You

  • Denine Temple

    Hi Keisha,
I didn’t know you were a member. Good to know. Wonderful place to hear about the love of GOD. Good luck on your 21 day challenge.

  • Denine Temple

I love this I really needed some direction to start off my spiritual walk with GOD, this year. My season of change with a dose of discipline. Thanks!

  • Esther Van Blarcom

Like many others have said, I am so thankful for this as I really needed a “project” to help me make quiet time a habit again. I really want to commit to this, and am praying to find the time it will fit best in my schedule…morning or evening. Morning seems too rushed and evening seems too tired…but I know God will bless any effort put forth to put Him first.

  • Lisa Martin

I was in a rush to go to school to teach and wished I had the time to be with Jesus. But, Jesus found me. Right when I went into school, another teacher began talking about Jesus and the message her church gave her. She was in a wonderful mood. It was a pleasant moment of fellowship! When I got home, I enjoyed this first session. Thank you so much! I feel Jesus is right there. When my day got tense earlier in the afternoon, I just prayed for the presence of our Lord and Savior. Everything became peaceful. What power of His presence.

  • Tammy Gotreaux

felicia, for many years i have felt lost as well. i recently divorced after 20 years of marriage. i knew that if i was going to move forward with my life, God would have to be in charge. i started attending woodlands church last sept and my life has changed so much for the better. keep seeking God and reading his word and things will become clearer and life will have so much more meaning.

  • Susan Denise

Wow, Tammy, your story is so similar to mine. I’m recently divorced after 23 years, and I, too, turned to this church and now I am ready to turn to God. I love all the “challenges” Pastor Shook gives us. I am looking forward to this 21 days to make reading God’s word a new habit. :) ))

  • Julie

I’m glad i have Jesus by my side because I really need him right now! Thank God for a church and a pastor that makes this so accessible to us. Bless Pastor Kerry and his family and church!

  • Theresa Rosa

I too divorced after 17 years. It sent me running back to the Lord! So I can thank God for that. It has been 5 years and God has done wonderful things. It has not always been easy but I can say that I would not trade the relationship I have with God and the dear friends I have made along this journey. If you have not been through Divorce Care please consider it. Starts up again Feb. 8th. God bless,

  • Theresa Rosa

I’ll pray. I got up too late and rushed through it. 5am is when I need to start my day. Breaking old habits is hard

  • Susan Denise

Wow, I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments about our journey together. I have chosen to set my alarm for 9pm daily for this, and to stop everything else for the evening (if I haven’t gotten to this even earlier in the evening.) Although I am not starting my day off with this, it was on my mind all day and I looked forward to getting to it. By 9pm, all my daily chores are done and I can relax knowing that I can begin reading this daily Bible challenge and take my time to let it really sink in and let it be the last thing on my mind as I go to sleep. I agree with Michele above that I hope this can continue through the year, especially since we are creating a “new habit” in 21 days, LOL! Thank you so much for this opportunity to know Jesus!

Kerry in his video stated that God and JeIf Jesus and God are the same person, then when Jesus prayed to God, was he praying to himself?

Kerry stated in his video that God and Jesus where one in the same. So, when Jesus prayed to God, was he praying to himself? I am struggling to understand how Jesus was both at the same time.

Thank you Pastor Kerry, you will never know how significant your word are being in my life, coming 10 years ago from other country, leaving everything, house, friends, only one luggage for my husband, daughter and me..starting a safe life here..then all falls down, my 15 year marriage,my dreams here…divorce, etc, so one sunday in 2001 came here to see if something God sent to me..i was crying since I park my car, being only with my daughter, with no english, with no house, with no husband..but with full of light inside of me from God. Now i saw my life going trought a lot of things..but now still smiling, with the plenty knowledge that God is holding me and my daughter in his arms..He is in control always and when I forget about it He knows the way to put me in track…so is time to enjoy the journal, is time to see the trees and the birds…He is driving my way..Thank you Pastor Kerry from this Colombian woman that you never even know, I will always come to see you in my good, bad and worst times..and you always help you are looking in my life and bring me God word trough you..sorry even writing my accent is a pain..but I cant stop to write and to talk..THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!!!!!Im so happy to start this 21 days…in Gods word

can i tell you the reason i noticed and will always notice elephants for the rest of my life is because my mother told me that i am the elephant in her room. don’t be sad for me. i can rise above an elephant tower with the power of the Holy Spirit in me. God has something for me that is not evident yet. I’m waiting…..:)

Love this challenge. Reading this to my 4 month old daughter as well! What version of the Word is this? I really like it!

  • Woodlands Church

@kelly that’s awesome that you are reading this to your baby girl. it’s never too early to start. the scripture is from the New Living Translation (NLT)

@ Jennifer What you’re struggling with is the biblical concept of the Trinity… Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Technically, God is one in essence & three in person. That’s three distinct persons, but one unique essence. This concept is one of the many mysteries of God. I say “mystery” because as finite man, we cannot fully understand how this is possible. This is true for many aspects of our creator…for his was are not our ways. The important thing to remember is that the notion of God being both 1 & 3 is NOT a contradiction as some would tell you. 1 in person & 3 in person would , of course, BE a contradiction. 1 in essence & 3 in person is NOT… it’s a mystery. A mystery is something we don’t know the answer to… but there IS an answer. Perhaps we will know the answer when we are in Heaven. Perhaps not. What we can know for sure is we serve a great & wondrous God! I hope this helps.

Getting a late start, but that just means I get to read to chapters together and I like that. my only excuse is no excuse at all – Too busy, I need to slow down, drink in the word, the light has always guided me where I need to be, on the best days and the worst, His light and His hand directing my life is beyond explanation in words.

I believe that the Book of John is one of the most important Books in the Bible, and I look forward to experiencing this next few weeks of in depth in-sight from everyone and with everyone. God Bless Woodlands Church.

  • Tiffany McKenna

@Casi – Have you read Whispers by Bill Hybels? I just finished it and it really has helped me to tune my ears to hear God’s voice.

  • Jennifer

It does. Thank you so much.

  • Beulah

soooo, what do you do when the 21 days is up? I read the 40 days of purpose and saw that movie about the “love dare” and the truth is, all of these “steps” to victory only lead people to trust in their own ability to read the bible, or to meditate on what you have said….when really what it is, is that Jesus Christ died on the Cross to give us the victory in our lives….for EVERYTHING. While I think studying and reading the Gospel of John is nice, and however awesome that book may be, if we don’t know the Author of the book, none of the stuff you are telling people to do is going to help them. I’m not trying to be ugly, but perhaps NOT telling people that it’s in what THEY do, but in what HE already DID….THEN people might be able to find what will ACTUALLY help them….just sayin.
