Day 7 // Motivation

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son …”  John 3:16 (NIV)

Ever given much thought to why you do what you do? What is your life motivation? What is your passion? What drives you and gives you reason to get up and get going?

This is Day 7 of our Advent adventure and it could very well be the turning point for you from merely existing to really living your life with passion and experiencing your most meaningful Christmas ever! What is it that makes life an adventure? As a child it was easy for most of us. Everything was new and we were learning and exploring and discovering so many things. I couldn’t sleep on Christmas Eve in anticipation of Christmas morning! How do we keep that sense of wonder? Whether it’s the daily grind, overwhelming responsibilities, or the sheer rut of the routine, life can fizzle. Maybe it’s time to re-examine your motivation in life. Listen to the motivation of a man in Scripture who lived life with adventure in the fullness of the Holy Spirit. He said, “I am controlled by the love of Christ, convinced that … He died for all in order to have the living live no longer for themselves but for Him who died and rose for them.” 2 Cor. 5:14-15 (Moff)

Paul was captivated by one single motivation in life – love! It’s the same motivation we read in our Advent passage today, “For God so loved the world that He gave…” Love motivates us to live and to give sacrificially. But here’s the interesting twist. It’s not that we need to love God more. As true as that is, we don’t have the capacity to do that until we first accept and experience how much God loves us! He always takes the initiative! 1 John 4:19 says, “We love, because He loved us first.”

Have you experienced God’s love? Maybe you’ve thought, “Well I’m much too great a sinner to experience God’s love.” Listen to the words of Paul who said earlier that he was controlled by the love of Christ. In Romans 5:8 he said, “But God shows His great love for us in this way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.” How awesome is that! God doesn’t wait until we clean up our act to love us! His love is not based on our performance! He loved us even while we were of no use to Him whatsoever and proved it by sending His one and only Son to die for us!

Take a moment to thank God for His great love for you. Consider that love that accepts you just the way you are and is reaching out to you right now with open arms to simply love you. You are loved!

“How amazing your love for me oh God! I want to experience how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know that love that surpasses knowledge that I may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” In Jesus name, Amen

What has been your life motivation?

How would your life be different if you too were controlled by the love of Christ?

In what ways does experiencing God’s love for you motivate you to love?

Examine your motivation in giving and let love set the amount this Christmas.
